2010 Summer Reading Program Print E-mail
Written by 2010 Literacy Initiative

lwg_book_ltbkgrdThis summer, in correlation with our "We are SHS" vision, we are moving to a "One Book, One School" approach to our summer reading program. By having the entire student body read the same book, we build our collective knowledge within our learning community through the exposure to a common story.

All students enrolled in an English class will be reading the novel A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah.

If you are an honors/Advanced Placement student, there will be additional novels required as well.

  • Incoming 108 - Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank
  • Incoming 208 - 1984 by George Orwell {Assignment 1} {Assignment 2}
  • Incoming 319 - Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser & Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut {Assignment}
  • Incoming 419 - Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky { Assignment }

On the first Friday, August 27th, 2010, all students will take a short objective (multiple choice/matching) assessment on the novel. During the week of August 30-September 3, students will also take a timed writing assessment that will be related to the larger themes of the novel.

Why do students read a book over the summer?
Consistent reading has demonstrated to be beneficial to keeping students' reading skills sharp. All students will take an objective test on August 27 (the first week of the 2010-2011 school year) and write a timed, in-class essay August 30 - September 3.

Where can I find the books?
Public libraries and local book stores are aware of our one-book program and they are stocking extra copies for students this summer.

Native Plantings Offer Unique Opportunity for Students Print E-mail
Written by Mr. K Turner

Help for Soil Erosion and Water Quality at Terada.

Planting5On May 6, 2010, over 200 students from Schaumburg High School's Biology II, Earth Science, Physical Science classes, and Environmental Club planted 7,300 plugs (very young plants) into an area of about ¼ acre at Terada Park at Schaumburg Road and Salem Road, in Schaumburg.
The planting is meant to help address some of the water quality issues at Terada, including Turbidity, Total Solids, and an elevated Fecal Coliform. For that area, it will ease the soil erosion problem. Native plantings were chosen that would help to anchor the soil while attracting birds and butterflies.
