Global Warming
According to
the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by
about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during
the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the
warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human
activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the
buildup of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous
oxide, which traps heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

Agreement Over Global Warming at G8 Unlikely
Watson, the US Administration's chief climate change negotiator has
said that the US will not agree to any reduction in emissions at the G8
meeting in July. This is a blow to British Prime Minister Tony Blair
who hoped that he would be able to persuade America to put artificial
constraints on energy use. Read More>>
Does Increased Solar Activity Invalidate Greenhouse Effect?
Three papers recently published in Science
suggest that the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth has increased
considerably in recent years. The levels of energy reported dwarf the
estimated contribution of the greenhouse effect. What does this mean?
The authors suggest that the numbers are overestimates, but if the
numbers are right then there is somthing badly wrong with greenhouse
theory.

Europe Likely to Demonstrate Kyoto's Infeasibility
Europe is almost certain to breach its collective commitment for greenhouse
gas reduction under the Kyoto Protocol. This will mean each country
will be responsible for its own reductions after 2012, most likely with
significant penalties. Also, Europe will not be allowed to rely on the
Emissions Trading Scheme to secure post-2012 reductions.
