TIPS/ Inferring

Forming a conclusion about the author's meaning using background knowledge and textual clues
Steps to Inferring:
  1. Preview text features and predict.
  2. Identify text structure.
  3. View/listen/read the text to make inferences or "read between the lines":
    -Look at specific text clues
    -Incorporate your background knowledge
    -Make an inference
    -Check to make sure all clues match your inference
  4. Summarize the key points and main idea
