Schaumburg High School                                                    English Department

Student Information Sheet

The English Department evaluates each student for quarter report card grades by totaling the points achieved by each student and dividing this sum by the total possible points in the quarter.  The student accumulates points by achieving in the following three areas:

            •     Daily work (quizzes, homework, projects, etc.)

            •     Written work (themes, book reports, term papers, etc.)

            •     Unit examinations (objective and essay)

The following grades will be awarded for achievement in English:

Authorized Absence

Homework will be accepted with full credit when submitted to the instructor within two days of return to class following an absence of one to five days.  Homework not submitted within the two-day limit will receive a zero point value or an “F” grade.  An absence greater than five days would be reason for a student and instructor to confer on setting an appropriate time limit.  Quizzes and tests must be made up within two days upon return to school following an absence from one to five days.  Failure to do so will result in zero point value or an “F” grade for that quiz or test.  Long-term assignments, such as term papers and speeches, are due on the due date regardless of a student’s absence and will not be accepted after the due date.

Written Work and the Computer Lab

      •     All formal papers – themes, book reports, and essay examinations – are to be written in ink or typed.

      •     All term papers are to be typed.

      •     Students are expected to have a disk to save their work as a backup for their e-lockers.

      •     Students should be prepared to work in the lab during the assigned period(s).  Students will need to

interact with their teacher while composing or editing their work and will need to be available for peer editing exercises.

      •     Students need to follow instructions for margins, fonts, spacing, etc. set by the teacher.

      •     Make-up time in the labs is available before and after school and throughout the day in AV.  Unless the

teacher has reset a due date, work is due on the date that was originally assigned.

      •     A technical failure is not an excuse for work not being turned in on time.

General Directions

      •     Turn in all assignments on time.  No late daily assignments are accepted.

      •     Answers on a Scantron sheet must be marked with a #2 pencil.

      •     Students are responsible for following the teacher’s requirements regarding course work and

supplies – paper, pen, pencil, notebook, folder, computer disk, textbook. etc.
