FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES

I.  Supplies

All classes require that you bring your covered textbook, workbook*, and the following supplies:

Folder with paper

Spiral notebook

Pen/Pencil

Bilingual dictionary

 *Students are required to purchase the workbook.  Make checks payable to SHS.  Consult teacher for the price of the workbook.

1.  In accordance with Schaumburg High School's Class Act program, the key to the success of the year is RESPECT.  We will respect the ideas and property of others.  COURTESY to others is a must in this class.  If there is a disagreement between people, please straighten it out in a mature, responsible manner .

2.  No food, candy, makeup, hair combing, walkmans, hats outerwear, etc. will be allowed.

3.  Active listening and participation lead to good discussion and opportunities for active learning.

4.  Take good care of your book, desk and all classroom materials.  Be sure to cover your book.  Failure to cover your book will result in loss of homework credit.

5.  Keep all handouts in your folder, not in your book;  Book bindings could become damaged.  Fines are assessed at the end of the year.

6.  Violations in these procedures will result in automatic zero grades:

-All materials should be kept underneath your desk during a test/quiz.  The student will keep his/her paper covered.  No talking is allowed until all tests/quizzes have been turned in. 

-The use of translation programs for written and oral work  is not permitted.

-Plagiarism in written or oral work will not be accepted.  No credit will be given.  Parents and administrators will be notified. 

II.  Homework

  1. There will be homework almost every night.  It will consist of oral preparation, written exercises, learning vocabulary, or reading preparation.  Failure to complete the assignment by the designated due date will result in loss of homework credit.
  2. One 50 point grade will be given per quarter to reflect each student's daily homework completion and class preparation.  The following scale applies:

III. Absence

  1. Make-up work following an absence is always the student's responsibility.   If you are absent, you must see your teacher to obtain the appropriate  make-up work.  See your teacher for handouts and special project information.
  2. The student has two days to complete make-up work.  All quizzes and tests will be made up in test make-up.
  3. For a field trip and pre-arranged absences, you must arrange to get assignments before you leave.  All work is due the day you return.  Failure to do so can mean loss of credit.
  4. In the case of excessive absences (five or more), an alternate exam may be given.
  5. Any absences totaling 10 in a semester will be reported to the assistant principal.

IV. Grading Policy

  1. Your quarter grade is divided into three equal parts:  1/3 Quizzes, 1/3 Tests, and 1/3 Oral/Written work.
  2. Extra credit is never given to inflate a student's grade.
  3. Anytime you may need some extra help, you should see the teacher to arrange a time. NHS tutoring is also available.
  4. The grading scale for the Foreign Language Department is as follows:
