Schaumburg Band Booster Newsletter

September 2004

From the Desk of the Presidents – We’re off to a great start!  Thank you to all who have sent in volunteer help lists.  We are overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support and help from our band parents.  Thanks to those who have helped with uniform fittings, uniforms before football games, football concessions, folding and stuffing Market Day forms and the Septemberfest Parade.  It’s wonderful to see how many people want to help and support the band.  Please keep in mind that there are a limited number of opportunities and we will try to involve as many of you as possible.  Remember our motto: “From Many One.”

Band Uniform Alert – Uniform care is your responsibility.  Hems must be above the heel of the shoe. You can use the straps to shorten the pants.  If it drags on the ground it will be ruined.  Airing out uniforms should be sufficient after a game.  If you feel a cleaning is necessary, call Nancy Bergman first at 847-524-4783.  The cape and sash cannot be cleaned! At our last two games we have had pop spilled on uniforms, and a brim ripped off a hat We understand that it’s crowded, but  if the uniform is damaged, you are responsible for repairs.

Official marching uniform – band t-shirt, black (no argyle) socks, clean white gloves, black band shoes, jacket, cape, sash, pants.

Band Camp – We lucked out with the weather.  The forecast was for rain all week and we had no rain and mild temperatures.  The uniform fittings went extremely well.  The students even performed a marching show for the neighborhood to enjoy.

Football Games – “Tommy” may be the Pinball Wizard but the SMB pulled off some magic of their own.  From the music to the choreography to the Starlight Flag Squad routine their performance was greeted with a rousing cheer.  If you didn’t catch this show you only have three opportunities left so mark your calendars for Friday, September 17, (Senior/Parent Recognition Day and 8th grade band visitation), Thursday, September 23 (Conant) and Friday, October 8 (Homecoming).

Septemberfest – We’re No. 1!!!!!  The rains came down, but nothing could rain on our parade!  We “Twisted and Shouted” our way to a trophy.  Congratulations to the band and the flags!

NIU Band Day – Saturday, October 2 – Our band as well as many other high school bands and the NIU Huskie Band will perform together at half-time.  Last year over 2000 students participated with Schaumburg having the largest band there.  It’s a great opportunity for the kids.  Parents keep in mind that it is Parents Weekend at NIU so if you’re planning on attending you need to purchase tickets in advance at www.niu.edu and go to the athletic department or call Ticketmaster.

Fundraising  - Fundraising is becoming more essential as equipment and instruments need to be replaced and repaired.  Students are having more opportunities to broaden their musical horizons: a trip to the orchestra, competitions, NIU trip, guest conductors and many other opportunities.  We need everyone’s support as the larger the band, the larger the cost.
