Diwali
Diwali is the time of the year when we light divas or lights
everywhere. Diwali is always on a no moon day. It was started when
Rama the God and King of Ahodhiya (a major state of ancient India)
came back to his country after his exile period had finished. Rama is
believed to have fought devils in the forest where he was exiled. The
lights represent his path from evil to pure. A week before Diwali it
is Bhaybeech, when the sister is taken care of by the brother it is a
change of responsibilities. Two days before Diwali it is Dhanteras on
this day we get up and pray for wealth by buying gold for goddess
Laxmi. On Diwali we pray for our future, and finally on Kalichoudas we
pray for the peace of the souls that have left us. During this
festival everyone dresses up in bright colors and there are rangolis (
color powder art) and flowers everywhere. On the day after Diwali is
the Gujarati New year Bastuvarash, on which day we do only good
things, so that we get only good things in the following year.
