New 2.0 No Pass/No Play Policy

Eligibility Guidelines and Procedures for Athletics and Competitive Activities

Students involved in athletics and competitive activities are subject to Illinois High School Association eligibility rules and also the guidelines set by District 211.

I.H.S.A. Eligibility Requirements:
  • Eligibility is checked weekly.
  • Students with near failing or failing grades are listed by course.
  • Students passing fewer than four academic subjects (does not include physical education or driver education) on a weekly basis or during the previous semester are listed as ineligible.
  • Students are ineligible to play until they are passing four or more subjects.
  • Near failing students may participate in the sport or competitive activity as long as they are passing the requisite number of courses.
District 211 Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility for competition is assessed at the end of each quarter. A student must achieve a 2.0 grade point average for the quarter, with no failing grades, to compete in the subsequent quarter.

Students who do not meet the 2.0 grade point average will be placed on probation for the next quarter and must adhere to the following academic interventions to continue to compete in extracurricular programs:
  1. Attend tutoring at least three times per week before school, after school, on Saturdays, or during free periods. Students may receive tutoring from the teaching staff, teacher aides, or other students who have demonstrated competency in a given area of study and who are assigned to this program.
  2. Obtain the signature of all teachers to verify completion of all homework assignments for the week.
  3. Maintain passing grades and good standing status according to the I.H.S.A. weekly guidelines.
  4. Check in with the head coach each week to submit teacher signatures and to update the coach on progress made during the week.
At the end of each quarter, a report is run to identify students who have not achieved a 2.0 grade point average or who have failed a class. Students who become ineligible will be monitored through the athletic or activity department. The athletic and activity directors will inform coaches and sponsors of the students who are failing to meet standards. It is the responsibility of the coach to work with the student to develop a plan to improve the student's grades. I.H.5.A. eligibility reports are completed and reported on a weekly basis in accordance with I.H.S.A. rules.

If a student has two consecutive quarters of a grade point average below the 2.0 standard, or if the student is below a 2.0 for one quarter and subsequently fails to adhere to the academic interventions outlined above, he/ she will be ineligible to compete in any extracurricular activity until the next quarter. Students who become ineligible after fourth quarter must enroll in summer school courses and continue to attend tutoring sessions the following fall.

The "New 2.0 No Pass/No Play Policy" has served to raise the academic expectations we have for our student athletes.  Student athletes who fail courses or allow their quarter GPA to fall below 2.0 average will need to attend (3) three tutoring sessions on a weekly basis in order to remain eligible for team participation.  I strongly encourage our student athletes to take full advantage of the many tutoring options available here at SHS during the course of the normal school day.  In the event this obligation is not fulfilled for any reason the coaches and Athletic Department will offer an "Athletic Study Hall".  The SHS Athletic Study Hall will be supervised by a certified teacher and NHS Students will serve as tutors.  The Schaumburg Athletic Study Hall will be located in room 210 and held from 2:50-3:25 pm.  Student athletes wishing to use this time for tutoring must get to room 210 on time.  Tardiness will not be tolerated.
