What are the different events within Debate?
There are many different forms of debate.
In fact, in Illinois alone, there are five different types of debate.
At Schaumburg, you are offered an opportunity that most schools cannot extend.
You have the opportunity to participate in THREE forms of debate (most schools only offer one).
Schaumburg High School offers Lincoln-Douglas and Congressional Debate.
Students, based upon their skill, dedication, and experience, may earn Varsity, Junior-Varsity, and Novice status.
Lincoln-Douglas: Lovingly referred to as LD, Lincoln-Douglas debaters discuss different areas of morality or principle, and rely heavily on philosophy and value to prove their case.
LD Debate is one on one, includes a cross-examination period, and lasts for about 45 minutes a round.
Typically, there are four rounds of LD during a tournament.
Tournaments are usually held twice a month on Saturdays.
Congressional: More commonly known as Student Congress, Congressional debaters hold mock legislative sessions, and deal with policy and issue relevant to true United States Congressional decisions.
Congress takes place in a room with 25 other Representatives or Senators with the average speech lasting about 3 minutes with a 1 minute, one-sided questioning period.
Typically, there are three rounds of Congress during a tournament, each lasting for 3 hours.
As a result, tournaments are only held once a month, usually starting on a Friday night (5-10pm) and concluding on a Saturday morning (8-1pm)
