How do I qualify for Officer / Captain Status?

In order to qualify for Officer Status you must:

 

ü      Have acquired at least one bid in the previous year OR placed at least once in LD-PF (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

 

ü      Have intimate knowledge of your content area .

      (LD-PF: resolution/topic – Congress: PW, ECON, FA, Bill Writing)

 

ü      Be available for ALL Wednesday practices and at least one extra practice a week

 

ü      Be a MODEL of Leadership for all team members (especially to the Novices)


These criteria make you eligible for Officer Status (appointed and elected).
At the end of the year, we will hold elections among those who are eligible and wish to run for the following season,

and we will announce our candidates for the appointed positions.

 

Appointed Officers include:  Captain, Research Chair, Committee Chairs, Legislative Chair

 

Elected Officers include:       President, Vice President, Secretary

                                           of the Schaumburg Chapter of the National Forensic League

 

It looks very impressive on a college résumé.

Your vote is weighted.
Your vote is equal to your years of experience.
For example, a novice vote is worth 1.
If this is your 3rd year on the team, then your vote is worth 3.
Only seniors who debated for 4 years straight will get 4 votes.

In the case of ties, I will cast a deciding vote.

 

 

Can I be an Officer and the Captain?

 

Yes.

 

 

What do Captains do?

1.  Serves as the Instructional Leader of the entire Debate Team

2.  Master of at least two Debate events

3.  Serves as a judge during mock debates

4.  Mentors team members

5.  Promotes Schaumburg Debate everywhere

6.  Communicates information to coaches and team members (liaison)

7.  Creates email / phone trees

8.  Critiques research (with Research Chair)

9.  Critiques speeches - persuasive / logical / extemporaneous quality

10.  Represents all of us for any team awards (sweepstakes, etc.)

 

for Congress:

-          works directly with Research Chair (involved in all decisions)

-          should know how to P.O. and run P.O. clinics

-          does research if a member does not

 

for LD-PF:

-          share cases

-          teach flow and CX

-          proofread cases

-          understands values / value criteria

-          understands philosophy

-          strong grasp of current events (PF)

 

 

 

What do Elected Officers do?

President of the Schaumburg Chapter of the National Forensic League:

1.  Chief Liaison between all parties involved in Debate

2.  Recruitment – serves as spokesperson in classroom visits (promoting)

3.  Writes announcements for the entire school

4.  Exemplar of model behavior

5.  Runs SHS Tournaments w/ coaches

6.  Receives Team Awards at events

7.  Encourages everyone in every capacity

8.  Present at all practices with coaches, captain (helps run them also)

9.  Participates in both forms of Debate

10.  Puts Debate as a priority before other athletics / activities

 

Vice-president of the Schaumburg Chapter of the National Forensic League:

1.  Takes on all responsibilities of the President when s/he cannot fulfill them

2.  Coordinates all fund-raising efforts

3.  Organizes social outings / banquet / parties / laser tag / t-shirts early

4.  Recruitment – makes/distributes all of the signs to advertise Debate in the school

(gets Activities Director signature)

5.  Helps webmaster Debate site

6.  Debate Photographer

7.  Runs all Billboard / Case-writing practices

8.  Participates in both forms of Debate

9.  Present at all practices (runs them if captain/president/coach unavailable)

10.  Puts Debate as a priority before other athletics / activities

 

Secretary of the Schaumburg Chapter of the National Forensic League:

1.  Takes on all responsibilities of the President-VP when s/he cannot fulfill them

2.  Takes attendance at all regular and Billboard / Case-writing practices

3.  Takes attendance on the bus – before and after events

4.  Creates judge files for all forms of Debate (and creates misc. files, checklists)

5.  Recommends Debate members for Varsity status to the coaches

6.  Helps webmaster Edline Research site

7.  Participates in both forms of Debate

8.  Puts Debate as a priority before other athletics / activities

 

 

What do Appointed Officers do?

Research Chair:

1.  Ultimately responsible for all coordination/completion of research

2.  Assesses the quality, quantity, structure of all research

3.  Determines the format, mode, and due dates of most research

(sometimes the coaches may have to intercede)

4.  Leads Committee Chairs (assumes their positions when necessary)

5.  Stays in constant contact with Committee Chairs (regarding assignments/completion)

6.  Understands all bills (seeks help if s/he does not)

7.  Determines bill assignments (may delegate to Committee Chairs)

8.  Completes missing and/or poor research (with help of Captain, Committee Chairs)

9.  Organizes bill analysis for main practices (which bills and why)

10.  Stay in constant contact with Committee Chairs

11.  Organizes Edline research (current and archived)

 

Committee Chairs:

1.  Follows the directives of the Research Chair

2.  Understands all bills within the Committee (expert at field)

3.  Determines bill assignments (with help of Research Chair)

4.  Completes missing and/or poor research (with help of Research Chair)

5.  Organizes committee level bill analysis for extra practices (which bills and why)

6.  Organizes Edline research (current and archived)

 

Legislative Chair:

1.  Understands what constitutes "original debate"

2.  Understands the difference between bills and resolutions

3.  Understands the basic premises of all Committees

4.  Writes bills and resolutions for the team (Chief Author)

5.  Helps to write authorship speeches (with Captain, co-authors)

6.  Meets with Mr. Robin frequently:

        - to complete legislative deadlines

        - to gain idea approval

        - to edit/revise legislation

7.  Demonstrates motivation to generate new ideas (from self and team)

8.  Uses proper bill and resolution format

9.  Organizes and runs a Legislative Committee meeting (strictly voluntary) once a month
