Project Description
The Saxon Action Campaign at Schaumburg High School uses a Social Norms Marketing approach to reduce student alcohol and tobacco use by promoting the “actual norm” that most students are making healthy choices by being alcohol and tobacco free. What is the “Social Norms” approach? The Social Norms approach is based on the fact that most students are already making healthy choices with respect to substance use. At the same time, students (and often their parents and teachers) believe that there is much more youth alcohol, cigarette, and other drug use than actually occurs. This misperception causes many students to believe “everyone is doing it” and creates a climate where many youth feel that substance use is normal. This can create pressure to initiate or continue alcohol, cigarette, and other drug use. The misperception also provides those who abuse with a justification for their behavior. The Saxon Action campaign is designed to correct this misperception and support the healthy choices that most young people are already making. The campaign provides students with accurate information about the prevalence of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use among their peers. Social Norms Marketing is being successfully used across the country in statewide campaigns, colleges, high schools and with other populations to communicate true, positive norms and reduce at-risk behaviors. Survey Page
Survey Administration Survey results show Schaumburg High School students have lower alcohol, tobacco and marijuana usage rates than students throughout Illinois and the nation.* On September 15th, 2008, SHS students completed the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) during gym class. The survey was conducted in a manor that was anonymous and confidential. It asked questions about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, as well as student perceptions of peer usage. The information was then analyzed by a statistician at Northern Illinois University. A total of 1,940 students participated in the survey at Schaumburg High School. Results from the September 2008 YRBS were similar to the results from the YRBS conducted at Schaumburg High School in March of 2008. The results of both surveys show most SHS students did not use alcohol, tobacco or marijuana 30 days prior to the survey implementation. Each year a new Schaumburg Youth Risk Behavior Survey will be administered in the fall to keep our information up to date and to track the impact of Saxon Action.
*30 day use rates of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana (National Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2007, and the Illinois Youth Survey 2006)
Survey Results 85.7% of Saxons choose not to smoke cigarettes.* 66.7% of Saxons choose not to drink alcohol.* 84.1% of Saxons choose not to use marijuana.* 79.6% of Saxons prefer to hang out with someone who doesn’t smoke cigarettes. 65.9% of Saxons prefer to hang out with someone who doesn’t drink alcohol. 78.9% of Saxons prefer to hang out with someone who doesn’t smoke marijuana.
